my favourite things/ He gives us quiet rest

"Finally, as day was closing and the stars of the heavenlies lined up next to a slightly-golden 3/4 moon in a navy sky... "
http://these are words penned by my friend Dawn over at dschondog.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/delight-gets-a-bike/
--------------
she is watching the same moon
the same night sky
from a long ways off

I felt right at her side
these delightful nights
when day touches evening
and it never quite gets dark here...
though
perhaps there...
with her 'navy skies'

then
of a sudden
the sun that just set in the west
will rise again in the east
in just three hours
until then the
quiet darkness hides herself
in a brilliant ceiling
navy clouds
cast lightly
across the eastern sky
rain taken to the mountains
passing us by

I came out at 8:30
and fell into bed at midnight
the hours inbetween
hidden in the night watch
talking to each horse
cleaning paddocks
milking goats
herding them across the evening fields
as long as they heard my voice calling across the pasture
they were settled

Blue dog doing her task
with zeal
Sam resting
his work done

the colours lay rich and warm
in the final hours of day
when one works
the slightly golden moon
bigger than half size
coming up with the night
the sky still bright yellow
the navy clouds still drifting
in the eastern sky

the robins
could not quit their song
it lilted sweet and melodic
from the forest branches
high up
floating with the night air
the flickers' call staccatoing
alongside
the echo joyous
and clear
pure sound
electrifying the night
I lay captive
in its lair
spell bound

leaving... not an option
in the beauty
of this darkening hour

"Even the darkness is Light to Him"

my goats call out
the birds now quiet
the train calling
Good Night
as its soft rumble
far off
in the distance
echoes

I finally go home
down the long driveway
up our hill

above me the Big Dipper
tips out her blessings
angel dust
all about me
I take this quiet rest
and close the door behind me
my steps soft

I lay me down to sleep

I know my soul
the Lord
will keep

He neither slumbers
nor sleeps

the Lord
my Keeper
through the closing of day
and through the night

across the land and sea
and here with me

He gives us quiet rest

my favourite things

  1. I know the Lord my soul will keep . . . in quietness and confidence is your strength. That's what I come away with from this writing, a confident knowing that He is, He cares, He keeps watch and so I can rest.

  2. Dear Susan,

I read this poem without noting the introductory sentences and after I read the poem I thought to myself, "Who is Susan talking about? Is she talking about her daughter in South Africa? So I went back and noticed the lines between the title and your poem. How surprised I was that your opening lines were about me! And, how blessed I felt that you should be thinking about me as you went about your nightly paces this particular Saturday night. Oh, Dear One, how this graces me with the solidarity I feel in our friendship. Thank you for this poem.

I came here to get some words for my daughter's birthday card. You always say so well and so precisely what I feel. Abby will be 27 on June 11. She is the one who has your calendar. I must have special words for her special day.

It is getting late and now that I am steeped in this sea of prose written with me in mind, I am going to call it a night and finish the birthday card in the morning.

I do love you and thank you for this special walk with you out to care for the animals under "our" sky,
    Dawn

  3. we never walk alone dear friend... His Spirit binds us joyously together just as His Spirit bears witness with our spirits that we are children of God...

  4. This is so beautiful and I'm crying for the umpteenth time already today, as I read of Him through what His sweet ones write. This fills me. I think you should be required reading for us, before bedtime each night. :) love you and God bless you and yours! deb

  5. Your words are soothing and come from a soul at rest! Some would picture the night as all darkness, something to fear - but I love the way you picture its beauty.

    1. Thanks Glenda; I used to be so frightened of the night but the older I get the more time has proven that 'perfect love' ( God's love) casts out all fear. He does that for us! Just another of His miracle gifts for His children...so so many gifts. I love Him so!

  7. Dee, isn't God so good to fill our days with such beauty. My prayers go up for those not so blessed; for those who face famine and war or even hardness of heart, I pray God's grace and blessing to know Him more and be blessed in Him. May God give us His heart of love to help where we can. Dee,thanks for your gracious words. You are so sweet!

  8. This brought tears to my eyes, too. How many times I miss it --- those moments between sun setting and the blanket of navy blue. And they are the most beautiful, aren't they! God calls us to a time of rest, and He creates the setting so wondrously ---- yet, most of the time we miss the miracle. Thank you for making it so real here -- something I can hang on to! Just captivatingly beautiful!

  9. Cora, that is so very true, how we so often miss the miracle; often I am too tired to go out for the last check on the farm, but go I must, and always God sends an amazing lift and encouragement. I might walk out carrying my bucket, head down looking at all my froggie friends, and then lift up my head in utter astonishment at the glory of the heavenlies, and I must smile because I know God put it there for our enjoyment! Such a good Abba Father!
